Can You Eat With Invisalign? Do's and Don'ts

The one rule that matters

Remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than plain water. Eating with them in risks staining the plastic, cracking or warping it under bite pressure, and trapping food and bacteria against your teeth for hours — a fast track to the cavities aligners are otherwise very good at helping you avoid.

Do

• Remove aligners before any food or non-water drink, including coffee, tea, and soft drinks
• Rinse your mouth (or brush, if you can) before putting aligners back in
• Brush and floss after meals to clear away anything that could otherwise sit against your teeth once the aligners are back in
• Keep aligners in their case the moment they're out — a napkin or your pocket is how aligners get lost or damaged
• Aim for 20–22 hours of wear a day, building meals and snacks around that rather than the other way around

Don't

• Don't drink coloured or sugary beverages with aligners in — even a quick sip can stain or feed bacteria against your teeth
• Don't chew gum while wearing aligners; it sticks to the plastic and can distort its shape
• Don't clean aligners with hot water — it can warp the fit that your treatment plan depends on
• Don't skip brushing before reinserting aligners after a meal, even a small one

In practice, it's a small adjustment

Most patients find that removing aligners before eating becomes second nature within the first week or two — closer to muscle memory than a rule to remember. Paired with the twice-daily cleaning routine, it's the simplest way to make sure treatment stays on the timeline your dentist mapped out.
