For Growing Smiles

Healthy Habits for a Healthy, Growing Smile

Myobrace® is a preventive orthodontic approach for growing children. Rather than focusing on the teeth alone, it addresses the underlying oral habits and functional factors — like mouth breathing, low tongue posture and tongue thrusting — that can contribute to crooked teeth and improper jaw development.

Looks Beyond the Teeth

We address the habits behind crooked teeth — breathing, tongue posture, swallowing and lip function — not just where the teeth currently sit.

Removable, Child-Friendly Appliances

A series of removable Myobrace® appliances supports healthy oral function, worn at home as advised rather than fixed in place.

Oral Myofunctional Therapy

Targeted exercises train the tongue, lips, cheeks and jaw towards correct tongue posture, a proper lip seal, nasal breathing and an efficient swallow.

Early and Preventive

Starting while children are still growing means functional issues can be identified and addressed early, where appropriate, before they become more complex.

Your Journey

What to Expect

  1. 01

    Assessment

We assess your child's teeth, bite, oral habits and function to understand what's influencing their development — and whether Myobrace® is the right approach.

  2. 02

    Education & Exercises

Your child learns healthy oral habits and a programme of myofunctional exercises to practise at home, with clear guidance for parents too.

  3. 03

    Myobrace® Appliance

Where appropriate, a Myobrace® appliance is introduced to support correct tongue position, lip seal and healthy jaw development.

  4. 04

    Reviews & Home Practice

Regular reviews track progress and adjust the programme. Consistent practice at home is a key part of a successful result.

Is It Right for Your Child?

Signs Worth an Assessment

Every child is different. An individual assessment tells us whether myofunctional therapy, Myobrace®, conventional orthodontics or another approach is right for your child.

Who May Benefit

  • Crowded or developing crooked teeth
  • Mouth breathing, or difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Open-mouth posture, or lips that don't stay together at rest
  • Low or forward tongue posture
  • Tongue thrust or an atypical swallowing pattern
  • Prolonged thumb, finger or dummy habits
  • Certain developing bite problems
  • Poor oral muscle coordination

When to Book an Assessment

At The Garden Dental, we look beyond the position of the teeth alone — assessing teeth, bite, oral habits and function — so each child gets care that fits their needs, and a healthy foundation for their growing smile.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

What is oral myofunctional therapy?

Oral Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is a programme of targeted exercises that improve the function and coordination of the tongue, lips, cheeks and jaw — helping establish correct resting tongue posture, a proper lip seal, nasal breathing and a more efficient swallowing pattern.

Why do oral habits matter for my child's teeth?

The way a child breathes, rests their tongue, swallows and holds their lips can influence the environment in which the teeth and jaws develop. Habits such as mouth breathing, low tongue posture, tongue thrusting, prolonged thumb sucking or a poor lip seal may be associated with certain dental and facial development patterns.

What age is Myobrace® suitable for?

Myobrace® is designed for growing children, typically from around five years old. Every child is different, so we recommend an individual assessment to decide whether myofunctional therapy, Myobrace®, conventional orthodontics or another approach is most appropriate.

Is treatment just about wearing an appliance?

No. A typical programme combines assessment, education, myofunctional exercises and — where appropriate — a Myobrace® appliance, with regular reviews. Children practise their exercises and habits at home, so consistency and cooperation make a real difference to the result.

Do you work with other specialists?

Where appropriate, yes. If breathing, sleep or other concerns need further evaluation, we may collaborate with or refer to ENT specialists, paediatricians or other relevant practitioners.
