Where the discomfort actually comes from

Aligners work by applying steady, gentle pressure to gradually move your teeth. That pressure is what you feel — not sharp pain, but a dull tenderness, most noticeable for the first 1 to 3 days after you start a new tray in the sequence. Some patients also notice minor rubbing on the inside of their cheeks or lips while their mouth adjusts to a new set.

How long it lasts

Because trays are typically switched every 1–2 weeks, the pattern repeats in a mild, predictable way: a day or two of tenderness after each switch, then it fades until the next one. It's rarely worse than the first week, and for most patients it becomes background noise rather than something that affects daily life.

Ways to manage it

• Stick to softer foods (soups, yoghurt, smoothies) for the first day or two after switching trays
• An over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen is fine if you need it
• A cold compress against the cheek can ease tenderness quickly
• Wear your aligners the full 20–22 hours a day as advised — inconsistent wear often causes more discomfort, not less, since teeth have to “catch up” each time
• A small dab of orthodontic wax over any rough edge stops it from irritating your cheek while you wait for your next check-in

When mild discomfort is actually a good sign

Some pressure after each new tray usually means your teeth are moving on schedule. If anything feels more like sharp or lasting pain rather than pressure, that's worth flagging at your next visit — but for the overwhelming majority of patients, what you're feeling is simply progress.
